Did the world really start sucking in the last few decades? Or does it just seem that way because I grew up?
Main Post:
I am 27 years old and I feel like the world has changed SO much in my lifetime. Society has flipped upside down. I grew up in the 2000s. Everything seemed so community based. Everyone seemed happy. Everyone helped each other. It seemed like everyone lived a slower life style. Everyone had more time. Everyone saw the good in humanity. The earth was literally more green. I could go swim in local swimming holes that are now all gated off. The forest I used to run around and play in is now a cul-de-sac. We used to have fun without being watched and judged all the time. We could make mistakes without being ridiculed for it.
Then it seems like early 2010s - 2020 during my adolescence, society became stricter and stricter. Like overtime everyone started to grow afraid of each other and untrusting. It’s grew rarer for strangers to go above and beyond for each other. Social media and texting replaced a lot of real social interactions. All real social interactions are planned out in advance now. The expectation shifted to needing to be reachable by text at all hours of the day. It used to be rude to call someone during dinner, or late at night. Work started coming home with you because of internet devices.. Everyone was getting instant news making it seem like way more bad things are happening. Beauty standards became more unrealistic. However even through all of this, this decade still seemed to have its beauty. I somehow managed school, work, extracurriculars and a healthy social life throughout high school and college and was happy doing it.
Then 2020 covid hit and the world has just seemed so dark and dreary since. It seems like there’s no more joy or magic in life. No one has real fun anymore. You are always worrying about everything at once. You are expected to be on top of everything you have to manage in your life all at once. For example I might have my family group chat planning a picnic and asking me what i’m going to make, my boss texting me about a project and making requests, my boyfriend texting me complaining about not seeing me enough, also while i’m getting notifications reminding me to pay bills, all while i’m trying to cook dinner and do chores and be with the family.. and like all of this going on and being expected to be mentally everywhere all at once... No wonder we are all anxious and overwhelmed.. and having fun just feel stressful with the amount of planning and coordinating around other things. Also needing to coordinate when you can do basic life things.. like get an oil change or take your dog to the vet around pre-allotted limited vacation hours at work.. like what is this life????
Anyway.. Coincidentally these time lines and shifts in society have aligned to change between my childhood, then adolescence, then adulthood. I graduated college the year the pandemic hit. I don’t know if it’s just my view of the world based on my age/milestones in combination of the changes that have occurred in society simultaneously? It doesn’t seem like my parents were as drained in their 20s/30s as we all are now.
Those of you that are a lot older than I am.. Did growing up feel like this for you even though the decades were different? or is it truly the changes between the different decades making life feel different?

The world is not “going to shit”. The world has always been shit and is simply continuing that way
Main Post:
People are always saying that the world is going to shit for x reason, as if we had a good world without any major issues and now this one thing is destroying it. But we know from history that the world has always been shit so even if something new is having shitty results, it’s not like that’s a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It’s just more shit being shovelled into the big shit pile
Top Comment: Comments here miss the point, there is no collective, that’s the origin of all the bigger picture points, and I agree. The chorus of voices suggesting we focus on our differences, rather than our shared life experience, encourages tribalism and generalization. The root cause of all American societal problems is selfishness. It used to be better controlled, regulated by the invisible hand of shame, and frowned upon. There is no more shame. Selfishness is now something people aspire to. The reason the “world is going to shit” is that people fail to realize that acting only for personal interest/gain/attention, is acting against what is best for society, and that is actually acting against what is best for the individual. This is why we live in a world of poorly developed, attention-at-all-costs, deprived individuals — which leads to unfulfilled existences and self-sabotaging behavior.
After what’s happening in the world, do you think the end is actually coming?
Main Post:
might get hate for this but idc, atfer being taught about the end times, im starting to notice something n think what if this is actually true n im terrified of what’s about to happen. Atfer trumps inauguration, in the back of my mind i keep hearing Armageddon might come.
maybe it’s religious trauma idk, but overall im fucking terrified n all over the place w this.
Top Comment: No because I’ve deconstructed the religious beliefs and have new ones that aren’t fear based. There have always been ‘end of the world’ happenings, it’s just never fully global and we Americans think we are so special.
Why is everything in the world so bad, awful, evil and horrible?
Main Post:
I've been questioning my existence and why I was even born since I have now realized how bad and evil the world is.
Their is a quote that I now believe to be so true since I see it everywhere in the world which is "To bear children into this world is like carrying wood to a burning house".
The fact that I'm just one person out of 8 billion people and that my existence means nothing. The fact that it doesn't matter if I'm here. People die everyday and the world doesn't stop for them and the same thing will happen with me.
Here are some things that have shown me how bad the world is
- The Parkland Shooter who killed 17 people and who attempted to kill 17 more at Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
- The Sandy Hook Elementary Shooter who killed 20 first graders and six employees at Sandy Hook Elementary then he killed himself.
- The News literally talks about all the Tragedies every single day of other people who have died tragically whether that be from a murder, accident, disease or something else.
- The fact that there are countless murders, rapist, robbers, looters and terrorist in the world and no matter how many individual you lock up it will never stop.
- The fact that so many people can die young and the world doesn't stop at all it's just another tragedy. For example I saw on the news there were two young kids who went out onto frozen ice near there house. The ice broke and they died as their family members couldn't get to them in time.
- The fact that there are countless mass shooters and evil people in this world who will kill anyone and not care.
I just don't understand why I was born into this evil world.
Top Comment: It sounds like you might be suffering with depression. I’ve been in your mindset. When I had my baby I had postpartum depression because I “brought her into a horrible, evil world where she will likely have to deal with being harassed, abused, assaulted, etc”. It was a dark time. I had a therapist to talk things through with, it helped a lot. I’m not great at giving advice, so my advice to you is to find a therapist or speak to a doctor. There’s light at the end of the tunnel. Now I get to experience my daughter through all the positives!
What is your honest opinion on the state of the world right now?
Main Post:
We live in a world that is ever changing as a younger person I have never really known much different, yet I would like to know how other people feel these days.

What do you think the world will look like in 20 years?
Main Post:
I’m still young. My life is just starting. I wonder what it’ll be like in some time?
Will there be some major social and cultural changes? Or a lot of subtle ones? What would those be? Will there be a shift in the political climate in the US and the world? Technological advancement, perhaps?
It’s fascinating to see how we make progress as mankind. We’ve come such a long way in just the past century- a fraction of our entire time on earth- that leading the lives our grandparents did, seems almost unfathomable. The world has completely revolutionised. It’s nothing short of a wonder.
Just the past few decades have seen unprecedented social progress. Are we going to keep going at this pace? Will the world we get to be a part of in the future be a much safer, open, and accepting place? Or perhaps, the current progress we’re seeing is a culmination of the efforts of millions of people over a century. Protests, rebellion, violence, bloodshed. The Civil Rights Movement, The Suffragette Movement, The Gay Rights movement. And so many more. Perhaps, it’s too much to expect so much from two decades. Perhaps, the world will look mostly the same.
Either way, I look forward to the world I inherit. And the one I am yet to inherit.
I look forward to being a part of it, contributing to it, being a voice for change, and hopefully, making it a slightly better place.
